Former New York Mets outfielder Chris Carter is among five players agreeing to minor league contracts with the Tampa Bay Rays. The defending AL East champions announced Friday that Carter, right-handed pitchers Jonah Bayliss and Dirk Hayhurst and infielders Daniel Mayora and Ray Olmedo also received invitations to major league spring training.

The 2010 season didn't exactly treat the Baltimore Orioles kindly. After a miserable start that saw them go 32-73, the Orioles hired Buck Showalter as their coach, and he turned things around at the end of the year, posting a record of 34-23 under his watch. This season the Orioles have a much improved infield and a bit more depth in the bullpen. The additions of Mark Reynolds at third base, JJ Hardy at shortstop, and Derrek Lee at first give them some much needed pop in their lineup.

The Tampa Bay Rays have signed veteran free-agent first baseman Casey Kotchman to a minor league contract. The Rays announced the signing Friday. Kotchman played last year for the Seattle Mariners, hitting .217 with nine homers and 51 RBIs. Over seven seasons, the 27-year-old Kotchman has a career average of .259 with 49 homers and 284 RBIs.

The Tampa Bay Rays will open their 2011 season on a new AstroTurf field. The Rays announced the change Thursday and said the installation of the new turf to their 1.1 million square foot Tropicana Field surface has already begun. Team officials say it will be completed for the Rays' April 1 home opener against Baltimore.
