Matt Garza knew what he was up against in facing Mariners lefty Cliff Lee, and he rose to the challenge Wednesday.

Garza outpitched Lee as the Rays beat a Cy Young Award winner for the third time this season.

Garza seems to relish the big-game matchups, but he said the key is not getting too hyped up.

“I have to come more down,” Garza said. “I’ve faced (Roy) Halladay, I’ve faced (CC) Sabathia. You know when those guys take the mound, it could be a long night or it could be a really short one. I just had to make my pitches, make ‘em, and just go toe-to-toe and last as long as he did, and I did that.”

Garza had only one rough spot, allowing a double, a home run and another double in the fourth, before regaining command.
